We got our luggage and took a cab to the hotel, hoping to check in early. Not so much luck, when we arrived at 1230pm, we were told "it would be a few hours" but they would store our luggage for us, so we decided to take a walk around Old San Juan and see what was around and what we could have for lunch.
It's really quite funny, we've been to San Juan about a dozen times, both as a stop on a cruise and a start/end point for others. So of all the Caribbean islands, that's where we have spent the most time - and when we get back to OSJ, it's always a hoot that things are still there and we can find our way around pretty easily. Walgreens, yep. CVS, yep. Supermax grocery, yep. Plus the Subway (across from Walgreens) Marshalls (in case you forgot something, like shoes. Happened to me once!) and a myriad of outlets (Tommy Hilfiger, Coach, Guess and more!) plus the usual T-shirt and trinket shops. All mixed up into narrow coblestone streets and hills and pretty colored storefronts.
We ended up eating lunch at the El Mesan sandwhich shop (above photo, on the right) which is a local chain, and the sandwhiches were actually very tasty, so if you are ever in Puerto Rico, please check one out!
After lunch (which we ate about 2pm) we headed back to the hotel in the hopes our room was ready. Alas, it was not, but it would be ready before 3. Oh, it's 3 already? Let me give you some vouchers for sangria, and we are so sorry, but we were completely full last night and it's taking a while to get the rooms ready. So we sat in the atrium courtyard of the hotel and checked our emails etc.
Could be a lot worse, right? Except we were pretty much exhausted from the red-eye and lack of sleep and all we wanted was our room. About 330pm it was finally ready, and we went up to room 410.
A nice room for sure, a bit on the small side, but the view was outstanding.
A short nap and then a shower and we were good as new! Off to find some dinner. There are a plethora of restaurants in OSJ, so you pretty much can just walk around and find something to suit your fancy. We ended up at a tapas restaurant, Toro Salao
We sat outside, it was a beautiful night with a great breeze. We had white corn gnocchi, a cheese flatbread and I had clay pot chicken (very good!) and Chris had a grilled pork loin with spanish fried rice. We also had some churros for dessert (YUM!!) and then walked around for a bit prior to heading back to the hotel. We finally called it a night around 10pm. More fun tomorrow with the walk to the forts!.
